A water heater is an essential part of every home. It provides you with all the water you need for showers and dishes, but it definitely does so at a cost. A water heater runs all day every day, and without maintenance, it will fail sooner rather than later. Of course, the quality of the water that goes into the tank has a big impact on how bad it gets. If there is a lot of minerals and contaminants in the water, there will be a lot more buildup in your tank than if the water is very clean. The problem is that the water sits inside of the tank for long periods of time so there is bound to be sediment collecting in there.

Your water heater should have a drain valve for you to be able to clean this out, but make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to do this.

There is another feature to your water heater that you can check for functionality, and that is the pressure relief valve. This is necessary to control the pressure in your water heater, and it is supposed to snap back into place if you open it up. If this doesn’t happen, it needs to be replaced.
